Dear Friends and Neighbors,
The 2026 legislative session is coming right up, and I’ll be holding a town hall meeting in Spokane Valley Saturday to tell you about it.
Trust me, we’ll have plenty to talk about.
• This year’s Legislature passed the biggest tax increase of all time, a total $14 billion. Yet our colleagues in the majority party already are talking about raising taxes again. They’re even talking about passing an income tax, something that would start small, but if history is borne out, it would eventually hit all of us.
• There’s good news and bad news on transportation. The North-South Freeway is finally being finished after a decades-long wait, but we also can look forward to perpetual increases in the gas tax.
• And at the state Department of Children, Youth and Families, which I oversee on the Senate Human Services Committee, we are witnessing record settlements for mismanagement and a meltdown in our Juvenile Rehabilitation system.
We’ll be talking about these issues and more when we get together Saturday morning. I hope you’ll be able to make it!
The meeting begins at 10 a.m. at CenterPlace Regional Event Center, 2426 N. Discovery Pl. in Spokane Valley.
More than ever, it’s important to keep tabs on Olympia. I want to hear your questions, thoughts and concerns. This is a great place for us to start.

Applications now open for 2026 session
If you are age 14 to 16, or you know someone who is, the Senate Page Program offers an outstanding opportunity to see Washington’s Legislature in action. Every year, hundreds of students across the state come to Olympia to spend a week working in the Capitol. Pages deliver messages and work in the House and Senate chambers during floor sessions. The page experience offers teens an adventure exposing them to career opportunities in the political and public policy arena.
Next year’s program operates January to March when the Legislature is in session. Each page is sponsored by a member of the Legislature. Applications have just opened for the 2026 session, and we have limited slots available. Applications and further information are available at this link.
