Transcript:

On July 3rd, 1984, I joined the United States Air Force. After 20 years and 8 months, I retired from the Air Force as a Master Sergeant, and it is an honor to be able to stand here today and speak in favor of this House Joint Resolution.

Today, we gather to celebrate and honor a group of men and women who exemplify selfless service, courage, and dedication to the protection our great state and nation – the soldiers and airmen of the Washington National Guard. As we commemorate National Guard Day in Washington, let us reflect on the rich history, unwavering commitment, and invaluable contributions of this esteemed organization.

The roots of the Washington National Guard extend deep into our state’s history, tracing back to 1855 when the Washington Territorial Legislature enacted the first law creating the organized militia. Since achieving statehood in 1889, the Guard has played a pivotal role in safeguarding America, both on our home soil and abroad.

Our citizen soldiers, pilots, and mechanics, hailing from different towns, professions, and backgrounds, safeguard the lives, property, and the economy of Washington.

Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, the Washington National Guard has been activated on numerous occasions, serving vital roles in World War I, World War II, the Berlin Airlift, the Korean War, the Gulf War, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Closer to home, they have been a beacon of hope in times of crisis, responding to natural disasters and emergencies.

From the 1948 flood relief in Ellensburg to the Mount St. Helens eruption, the Oso landslide in 2014, and numerous wildfires throughout the years. They provide life-saving help and services to support our affected communities.

Comprising both the Washington Army National Guard and the Washington Air National Guard, approximately 8,400 citizen-soldiers and airmen stand ready to serve, with 6,300 in the WAARNG and 2,100 in the WA ANG. Their commitment to duty is unparalleled, and their impact is felt across every district in our state.

In closing, let us convey our gratitude to the Washington National Guard for personifying the virtues of loyalty, selfless service, integrity, and personal courage. May their dedication continue to inspire all of us, as we are grateful for the guardians who protect the Evergreen State.

Thank you, and happy National Guard Day in Washington.
